The Story Behind AIU
Two cities, one mission – making AI accessible to everyone willing to learn and build. Here’s how we got here.
Origin
Born in Dubai, Built for Everyone
In 2024, a small group of professionals in Dubai had a simple frustration: AI was moving fast but the learning resources were either too academic, too expensive, or too filtered for a specific industry. They wanted a room full of builders from every field – engineering, business, healthcare, law – figuring it out together.
So they started a weekly gathering in Dubai. No agenda, no sponsors, no keynote slides. Just curious people, honest conversations, and a shared belief that AI belongs to practitioners – not just researchers or big tech.
It outgrew the first venue, then the second. Online sessions drew members from Cairo, London, and Riyadh. Then Vancouver came calling – a city full of world-class engineers, researchers from UBC and SFU, and a thriving startup scene that was hungry for exactly this kind of community. The Vancouver chapter launched in 2025 and scaled fast. The underground went transatlantic.
Values
What We Stand For
01
No Gatekeeping
You don’t need a CS degree, a job title, or a startup to belong here. If you’re curious about AI and want to learn, you’re welcome.
02
Real Over Hype
We talk about what actually works. No AI washing, no buzzword bingo. If you’ve deployed it or built it, we want to hear about it.
03
Build in Public
The best learning happens when people share failures as openly as successes. We create space for honest, vulnerable conversations.
04
Community First
No VC funding, no corporate agenda. Decisions made for the community. We’d rather stay good than scale hollow.
